A/N: Chapter 4 is finally out! This has set on my computer for idk how long and I've tweaked it here and there and finally decided to just post it. It does move the plot along, so, there's that, lol.

Batman dropped down from the window sill. The stale sour smell of mildew and dust permeated the air around him. It had only been a few days since Dick had been rescued from this very building but upon first glance it seemed as if the building had been abandoned for years. It was unsettling.

Batman looked to his left before clicking a small button on the side of his mask, activating the night vision of his cowl. "A, blue prints?"

"Sending them now, sir."

A small outlay of the building appeared in a dark blue print in the upper portion of his cowls lenses. Batman let out a small hmm as he focused on the lower floors of the building. "The sub-levels of the building, all are accounted for?"

"There seems to be an outcropping in the lower levels. Not sure if it is the buildings foundation, or something more."

"Security room?"

"Not far from the outcropping, actually, Sir."

Narrowing in on the sub-levels of the building, Batman headed from the office and out into the hallway. He knew it was most likely a fruitless venture, but he had to try. If Cadmus left anything, even the most miniscule amount of information might be helpful in gaining some sort of understanding on how to help Dick. A sound from down the hall had the Dark Knight ducking into an open office and turning to glance out over the door jam. After a beat of silence, Batman slowly eased out of the office and glanced around, taking note of anything out of place. When nothing struck him as misplaced, Batman began to make his way to the stairwell.

"There seems to be a blip on the motion sensor."

"A Blip?" Batman quietly opened the door to the stairwell and glanced down over the edge of the railings, his eyes scanning for any movement below.

"Yes, Sir. Seems to be coming from an outlier on the ground floor."

Unclipping his grappling gun from his belt, Batman shot the hook up to catch on one of the upper floors railings. "Can you get a visual?" He pulled the hook taught before jumping over the safety railing and repelling down the numerous flights of stairs.

"I'm afraid not. Their seems to be no power supply to the building outside of the motion sensors. Quite unusual. "

"Or someone is wanting to keep up appearances of the building being abandoned." Batman stated as he tugged the grappling hook loose from its catch and reset the device.

"It may very well be but please do proceed with the utmost caution."

With a gentle push, Batman opened the stairwell door and glanced to and fro checking for any sign of movement before slipping through the door and proceeding down the hall. He looked once more at the blueprint of the building before heading towards what appeared to be the Security Room.

"The blip has yet to move it seems contained to the outlier, Sir."

"Let me know if there is a change in location." He stopped in front of a door that appeared to have a electronic key pad in place of a door handle. Odd. The green light on the key pad meant there was an electric source still functioning somewhere in the building, probably the same electric source that was powering the Motion Sensors.

"Of course."

Batman sighed and quickly pulled a small device from his utility belt. He wasn't as well equipped for hacking as Robin was. He remembered the first time he tried hacking a computer on a mission, there were quite a few jokes about him being a Geriatric Hacker and wanting to know if he still needed a floppy disk with his code on it to get the job done. After that wonderful experience, he had helped Dick redesign the Robin suit to fit the boys technological needs and the kid had taken over the hacking responsibilities on missions ever since. Much to his chagrin.

The small piezo sensor circuit was definitely old school, but it was a simple device that proved to work time and time again. He gently set the small circular object onto the keypad and waited a few scant moments before a red light blinked and the electronic click of a lock opening resounded. Batman picked the object back up and made his way into the darkened room.

The night vision on his cowl allowed him to see a room full of computer monitors all seemingly covered with a thick layer of dust. Adding to the sense of the buildings disuse. Someone had gone to great lengths to make it appear as if the building had been empty for quite some time. Making it all the more important to uncover what exactly had transpired.

Batman rummaged through his utility belt until he came to his portable power unit. The small device wasn't anything spectacular but he was hoping he would be able to find what he needed by the time it died. He made quick work of plugging the electronic device into the lone computer tower in the room and within seconds the computer seemed to boot up and the monitors before him kicked on. With swift movements, Batman plugged in his jump drive and set to work. He quickly scanned the most notable folders and copied files he thought would be of importance before he came across a trash file of security footage dated from Dicks stay. He hesitated only a moment before selecting those files to copy as well. He started up the Un-Eraser Program on the drive and watched as the completion bar gave him an estimate of 12 minutes.

"Sir, the blip appears to be on the move, he is currently en route to the stairwell."

Batman turned to the door and hummed an acknowledgement before turning back to the computer. He scanned the remaining folders trying to make sure he copied everything he could possibly need.

"Blip just exited the stairwell on your floor."

"Understood." He looked to the door once more, hoping whoever the mysterious blip was wouldn't be able to get through until he was finished.

"I don't mean to alarm you but it seems two more blips have appeared on the motion sensor. They are converging on your location as well."

"Can you overlay the motion sensor with the buildings blueprints?" He was starting to get aggravated. For a seemingly empty building there was an awful lot of activity happening.

"Transmitting now."

And just like that, three bright red circles flashed to life over the projection of the blueprints. Batman focused on the one closest to him, seemingly only a few doors down from his location.

"Please do be careful, sir."

The computer beeped that it had completed its job just in time for something big and heavy to bang into the security rooms door.

With a sigh of frustration, Batman pocketed the jump drive and the portable power supply, plunging the room back into darkness. He made his way towards the door just as whomever was on the other side ripped the door of its hinges. Batman barely had time to bring his arms up to block a punch to his face before the other two blips appeared behind his attacker.

Distracted by the appearance of the other two unknowns, Batman missed the punch to his midsection. He let out a grunt of pain before bringing his foot up to kick at the intruders chest.

-_-_-_-_-_-

Robin woke with a groan, pushing against the mattress as a flash of rancid death marred his vision. The phantom smell of rotten flesh sent his already sensitive stomach into a roiling sickness. He choked back bile as he turned onto his side coughing at the imaginary pungent smell. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath through his nose and exhaling slowly to try and calm his upset stomach. The cold air of the hospital helped ease some of his distress but the image of the deformed and scarred man crept up once more, teeth black from decaying flesh and blood glared at him from behind thin cracked lips. He could feel the deformed mans gnarled fingers mauling at his face trying to inflict the same malformities. Robin threw the covers off and crawled up to the headboard of the hospital bed eyes seemingly focused elsewhere. He could feel the rage cascade from the distorted man, could tell how much the man wanted to scream out the atrocities that had been done to him but knew the cancerous mass that had once been vocal cords wouldn't allow him even that simple feat.

"It wants out, but it can't, it can't get out. They won't let it, cover their lies with forced lethargy." Robin whispered shaking his head trying to rid himself of the visions that seemed to have plagued him since his escape.

A shrill scream ripped from him as the teen flung himself from the bed to the tiled floor. He screamed once more in pain, his back arching high off the floor trying to ease the imagined aches coursing through him. He could feel the walls closing in on him; Felt a tightness in his chest that had him gasping shallowly for breath. He wanted to run from his body but there was no escape. Just a sense of dread that had him turning to stare at the lone window in the room. Rolling to his knees, Robin made his way to the window, he could hear voices in the hall now. Most likely coming to check on him. Still feeling the tightness of desperation tugging at his chest, he pushed the window open and stepped up onto the sill. His eyes glanced from the side of the building to the streets below.

"It isn't constant." He murmured, eyes turning to stare at the night sky above him, the cold night wind whipping at his bangs. "Chaotic variables."

Robin glanced behind him as the door to his room opened, he could see the wide eyes of the nurse and aide.

"Has to be constant." He decided, hands gripping the sides of the window and turning to stare at the canopy covering the hospital entrance below. "Speed and fluid are lesser in the equation." With a nod of certainty, Robin jumped from the window sill.
